Elk Breeding Calls
The fall starts the breeding season for Elk in New Mexico. New Mexico Department of Game and Fish manage the elk herds and conduct a count each year to assess the total population of elk in New Mexico. The bulls form harems of 15 to 20 cows and breed with them until the end of the breeding season. After that the bulls will form bachelor groups and the cows will form into large herds until the birth in spring. The elk calls are used to identify which calf belongs to which cow and during matting season bulls will call to cows that are ready for mating.
